Yankees add pitcher to replace Max Fried
The Yankees and Mets are playing a Subway Series this weekend at Citi Field.
NEW YORK โ The Yankees waited a day to place left-hander Max Fried on the injured list while deciding on a temporary replacement starter until Gerrit Cole returns from Tommy John surgery within the next two weeks. They opted to recall right-hander Elmer Rodriguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over fellow rookie Brendan Beck. The Yankees are changing their rotation to start Rodriguez on Sunday against the Mets on six days rest.
Lefty Ryan Weathers will be pushed back from Sunday against the Mets to Monday against Toronto, while Will Warren will go Tuesday instead of Monday. Rodriguez, who had been scheduled to start Saturday for Scranton, probably will get two starts for the Yankees and then head back to Triple-A when Cole makes his season debut. Cole is scheduled to pitch for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday night and then make one more rehab start next week.
In a first big-league stint earlier this season, Rodriguez had major control issues while going 0-1 with a 5. 19 ERA in two starts. In 8 2/3 innings, he struck out five, walked eight and hit two batters.
โI know Iโve got good stuff, so I just got to trust myself and attack guys,โ Rodriguez said. Yankees manager Boone is expecting Rodriguez to be better in his second stint. โI donโt think he commanded the ball like he will,โ Boone said.
