Trevor Story considering surgery, potential 6-10 week absence from Red Sox
ATLANTA — Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story said Saturday that he is considering surgery — and evaluating all options — when it comes to the sports hernia that landed him on the injured list Saturday . Story has seen multiple doctors about the injury, which has bothered him since spring training, and will continue to gather information in the coming days. At this point, he’s unsure if surgery will be required.
“We’re still unsure, but possibly,” he said when asked about surgery. “Still trying to diagnose it, the severity of it, because we’ve got a couple of different opinions. “We’re trying to get the best information, not make a rushed decision,” he added.
“Obviously, surgery is not ideal or wanted, so trying to navigate this thing as best we can with the information that we have. ” Story said the “basic prognosis” for surgery to repair a sports hernia is a 6-10 week absence. “I’m trying not to let my mind go there,” the shortstop said.
“It’s obviously different for each guy. ” Story, who started 41 of Boston’s first 44 games this season, said the issue first popped up in spring training. The Red Sox held him out of the lineup three times in the last three weeks due to groin/adductor issues, which he aggravated in Baltimore in late April, according to a source.
Story did not participate in any baseball activities Thursday, when he had the night off in Atlanta. On Saturday, he was placed on the 10-day injured list with utility man Nick Sogard taking his place on the roster. Story said the decision to go on the IL represented taking a “timeout” to try to get the issue right.
