Cougars, Bulldogs complete sweeps; CSU avoids sweep; Gamecocks drop 12th straight
May 16—MOUNT PLEASANT — Nick Diaz, Braeden Smith and Will Tippett al hit three-run home runs as College of Charleston defeated William and Mary 12-2 in seven innings to complete a three-game sweep and clinch a berth in the CAA Tournament. The Cougars (28-26, 18-12 CAA) finished second in the CAA South to qualify for the May 20-23 event in Wilmington, N. C.
Charleston will make its 27th consecutive conference tournament appearance. Tippett finished 3 for 3 with a homer, double and three RBIs, while Diaz was 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs. Smith was 2 for 3 with a homer, double and three RBIs.
Ethan Plyler was 3 for 4 with an RBI and stolen base, and Jacob Amman was 2 for 4. Ryan Hench went two scoreless innings to earn the win in relief of Carson Bryant, who allowed two runs in three innings. Alex Lyon got the final out after appearing in his 100th career game, setting a program record for the most appearances.
The Citadel 12, VMI 7 LEXINGTON, Va. — Lane Tobin hit a pair of home runs, his first of the season, to pace The Citadel to a 12-7 victory over VMI at Gray-Minor Stadium, completing the weekend sweep of the rival Keydets. Tobin drove in a season-high four runs for the Bulldogs (30-24, 11-10 Southern Conference).
Sam Dansky scored a season-high three times and stole two bases. Zach Hunt collected three hits, including a double, and scored twice. Christian Stratis drove in two runs with a double and added a run scored.
