Six standards set during District 10 track and field meet at Slippery Rock
The gold medalists for Saturday's District 10 track and field meet not only clinched PIAA berths, but included six who set records.
SLIPPERY ROCK — District 10 track and field records from the 20 th century are headed for extinction. Meadville’s Tymir Phillips continued such disappearances during the May 16 meet at Slippery Rock University, where he eclipsed its Class 3A boys long jump record. The senior’s gold medal attempt of 24 feet, 6½ inches exceeded Idris Cates’ former standard of 24 6¾.
Cates established that record in 1994 with the former Strong Vincent Colonels. The overcast competition at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium concluded with five other meet records. One was by Blake Glass, who helped Fort LeBoeuf finish first in the Class 2A boys team standings.
The senior lowered the 1,600-meter standard to 4 minutes, 13. 17 seconds. Grove City topped the 2A girls team standings with two new meet records.
Former PIAA titlist Milena Sciullo voided her 2024 triple jump best of 39-3 with a May 16 attempt of 40-2, while teammate Aleah Morgante became the first small-school female who cleared 12-8½ in the pole vault. The other two new records occurred thanks to Erie County athletes. Corry’s Blake Cook began postseason defense as the PIAA’s best in the 2A boys 300 hurdles.
