He’s brought in Arne Slot as head coach, overseen the departure of key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, managed the biggest transfer window in the club’s history and this summer will again oversee key players departing.
Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson will certainly leave. We expect Alisson Becker to join them, potentially Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones, too. Overseeing departures like this is two-fold, though.
It also requires finding replacements, either directly position-to-position or in terms of what they bring to the squad. Replacing Alexander-Arnold, for instance, meant not just finding a new starting right-back but also making up for the dramatic loss in ball progression and creativity. Something, it’s fair to say, Liverpool are yet to do.
Hughes has gotten ahead of some of these departures, though. For Alisson, that meant signing Giorgi Mamardashvili in 2024 for him to join in 2025. But reports are growing that Mamardashvili won’t be the one to replace the Brazilian.
