PIAA TENNIS: Abington Heights falls in Class 3A semifinals to defending state champion Conestoga
Abington Heights’ memorable run to the PIAA Class 3A boys tennis semifinals ended with a loss to the defending champion. Conestoga, the District 1 champion, defeated the Comets, 3-0, early Saturday morning at the Hershey Racquet Club. Abington Heights, which has won the last 13 District 2 championships, ends the season at 17-1.
Junior Ethan Sun defeated Abington Heights freshman Prayush Mallaiah, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. Tristan Lubiniecki beat William Arp, 6-0, 6-2, at No.
2 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Jake Duffy and Will Connelly defeated Brody Goldberg and Sebastian Meyer, 6-3, 6-0, to lead Conestoga (20-1).
Abington Heights’ No. 1 doubles team of Liam Farrell and Bryce Comstock was leading Jake Tsang and Leo Brown, 6-4 and 5-5, and Brady Comstock and Sean Fan were locked in a battle, 4-6, 6-5, when the match halted. The loss brought to an end Abington Heights’ team season, but Mallaiah and the doubles team of Farrell and Arp are District 2 champions and have reached the PIAA Tennis Championship weekend May 22-23 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
Abington Heights reached the semifinals for the first time since going to two straight final fours in 2014 and 2015. Wyoming Seminary (16-1) lost in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals late Friday afternoon. District 10 champion Cathedral Prep defeated the Blue Knights, 3-2.
