Willem II earn slim lead over Almere City in Eredivisie promotion push
Willem II earn slim lead over Almere City in Eredivisie promotion push Willem II travelled to Almere City last night as slight underdogs in their Eredivisie promotion play-off 1st leg. However, the side ended up stealing a 1-0 victory to take home with them as they look for an immediate return to the Eredivisie following their relegation last season. While Almere City were the favourites going into the clash according to various media, Willem II have had the better of the match up this season.
Back in August the side won 1-0 away from home, while in the reverse fixture just a few weeks ago they won 2-1. Despite only having 35% of the ball and eight shots to Almereโs 15, Willem IIโs Samuel Bambaโs goal just after the half hour mark proved decisive. With 70 minutes gone, Willem II had the chance to extend their lead further when they were awarded a penalty.
However, Mounir El Allouchi was unable to convert as Tristan Kuijsten made the save. This save could be decisive if Almere can turn things around in the second leg. In just two days time the sides will meet again, with the winner likely to face either Telstar or Volendam in the promotion/relegation play-off.
