The Linden High School softball team has done a nice job bouncing back from last year’s four-win campaign and has already reached the nine-win mark this year. A big part of that has been an infusion of freshman talent, and that includes gaining a reliable arm in the circle in rookie Leah Vera, who is the MyCentralJersey. com Softball Player of the Week.
Softball roundup, May results for Skyland, GMC, area Union County The Tigers had a five-game winning streak snapped by top-seeded A. L. Johnson in the Union County Tournament, but it was Linden’s longest run since 2011.
Vera claimed the victory in four of those triumphs, including her first shutout and a 10-strikeout performance in a win over Roselle. She struck out 33 in those victories and walked nine over 23 innings, finishing with a career-high 13 strikeouts in a UCT verdict over Plainfield. She entered this week 7-3 for the season with 63 strikeouts and 34 walks in 53 innings.
“Leah has been a great addition to our team,” Linden coach Peter Naumowicz said. “She has put in hard work and discipline to excel as our number-one pitcher. Her passion for the game is seen in every game, inning, and pitch.
