Canaries rally for opening day victory
Lincoln, NE (CANARIES) — Scott Combs drove in four runs and the Sioux Falls Canaries rallied to top Lincoln 6-5 in ten innings on Opening Day. The Canaries opened the scoring with an RBI sacrifice groundout from Anthony Hall in the third inning but the Saltdogs grabbed the lead with a two-out grand slam in the fifth. Josh Rehwaldt cut the deficit in half with a solo homerun in the top of the sixth but Lincoln responded by belting a solo shot in the seventh.
The Birds loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning when Combs smacked a three-run double to tie the game before picking off the potential go-ahead run at third base in the bottom half. The 5-5 tie held until the top of the tenth when Combs once again doubled with two outs, bringing in Michael Curialle for what proved to be the winning run. Charlie Hasty induced three popouts in the bottom half to secure the victory.
Spencer Bauer tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win while Combs and Mike Hart each finished with two hits. The Canaries (1-0) will look to clinch the series when the two teams meet Saturday at 6:05pm. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
