That group is led by Derek Stingley Jr. , who has earned All-Pro honors in each of the last two seasons and continues to get better every year. Because of Stingley’s elite talent, opposing quarterbacks rarely test him, which brings the focus to the man lining up on the other side: Kamari Lassiter .

Lassiter brings the ultimate competitor mindset and an infectious energy to the defense every time he steps on the field. You would think with teams avoiding Stingley, Lassiter would be more vulnerable to giving up big plays due to the increased volume of targets — but that has been far from the case. The former Georgia standout is an outstanding football player who continues to improve each season.

Not only is Lassiter strong in coverage, but he is also extremely physical and never hesitates to come downhill and make tackles. At one point last season, he even led the Texans in tackles. When you have two cornerbacks playing at that level, it opens up so much for a defense — and that is a major reason Houston has become so dominant.

The Texans also move Jalen Pitre all over the field, but his ability to play nickel has made this defense even tougher to attack consistently. When you have that many high-level defensive backs on the field at once, opposing offensive coordinators are absolutely losing sleep preparing for you. Houston also invested a third-round pick in Jaylin Smith last year, though injuries limited him for most of the 2025 season.
