Of all the NHL teams in transition right now, the New York Rangers are particularly intriguing – and not necessarily in a good way. For the past two seasons, the Rangers have spectacularly cratered in the standings, and the hockey gods have not rewarded them for it, denying the Blueshirts a top-three pick despite being the NHL’s third-worst team this past season. The Rangers fell to fifth in the draft, but that’s the highest they’ve drafted since the 2020 draft, in which they picked left winger Alexis Lafreniere – a move that hasn’t resulted in Lafreniere turning into a legitimate superstar.

In the midst of the Rangers’ catastrophic season this year, GM Chris Drury wrote a letter to Rangers fans , in which he made it clear that the road he was taking wouldn’t involve tearing it down to the studs. “This will not be a rebuild,” Drury said in the letter. “This will be a retool built around our core players and prospects.

We will target players that bring tenacity, skill, speed, and a winning pedigree with a focus on obtaining young players, draft picks, and cap space to allow us flexibility moving forward. That may mean saying goodbye to players that have brought us and our fans great moments over the years. These players represented the Rangers with pride and class and will always be a part of our family.
