The Boston Celtics could make some major changes to their roster this offseason after a first-round exit in the NBA Playoffs, and LeBron James could be a name to watch.
James is a free agent this season, and if the Lakers don't want him back, or if he wants to leave and be the focal point of a team, it's possible he could land back in the Eastern Conference. James is not going to go to a team that is not already a contender, and the Celtics could be a landing spot. However, MassLive's Brian Robb outlined the chances of that actually happening.
"James will be one of the bigger wildcards in free agency with the Lakers potentially looking to pivot to a younger supporting cast around Luka Doncic," wrote Robb. "However, itโs hard to consider a world where James would consider Boston, even with the possibility of contending being on the table. The Celtics could only offer him their mid-level exception ($15 million) in free agency.
They do have a $27 million TPE but that would require a sign-and-trade deal, which would mean the Celtics would need to sweeten the pot for some help from the Lakers to get a deal done. Realistically, itโs hard to envision James joining his longtime rivals when a reunion in Cleveland or another Western Conference team could be on the table offering more money. " Despite his age, James proved he can still dominate as a top option.
He practically carried the Lakers past the Houston Rockets in the playoffs. Adding James would certainly keep the Celtics as a contender, but they may not be able to compete with some of the other offers he gets. The Cleveland Cavaliers would seemingly be one of the favorites to land him if he leaves.
