The NCAA Tournament recently made the move to 76 teams from 68 and the College Football Playoff went from just four teams to 12 starting with the 2024 season.
It was then that Curt Cignetti took over a long-ailing Indiana football program and led it to an appearance in that inaugural 12-team playoff format before winning the whole thing just a year later, becoming the first program to win a game following a first round bye. Now there’s talk of further playoff expansion and Cignetti… well, he has bigger things to worry about, like his own program. Cignetti addressed playoff expansion during a speaking appearance with Indiana fans in Carmel on Thursday night, saying that he doesn’t typically pay much mind to matters over which he has no control.
Though he noted his support for Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti, who supports a 24-team playoff. It’s the usual with Cignetti, he doesn’t have much interest in opinions one way or another on the hot topics around college sports on NIL or the transfer portal. He’s focused on how to win.
