UNF baseball captures ASUN Graphite Division title
UNF baseball earned a division championship Thursday as the Ospreys gear up for the ASUN Championship.
The University of North Florida just picked up a piece of hardware as they continue their road toward the NCAA regionals in baseball. The Ospreys clinched the Graphite Division regular-season championship with their come-from-behind 6-5 victory over West Georgia on May 14 at Harmon Stadium. Consecutive RBI groundouts in the bottom of the seventh inning brought Sean Benjamin and Gialdri Gomez with the tying and go-ahead runs, and John Costa nailed down his second save.
The Graphite Division championship is the first ever for UNF baseball in the ASUN, and the Ospreys' 20 conference wins are the most for the program since moving to NCAA Division I in 2005-06. For the Ospreys (29-22, 20-8), the Graphite Division regular-season championship does not automatically translate into a top seed in the ASUN Tournament, which begins May 19 in DeLand. Those seedings are also determined in part by the NCAA RPI, with the No.
1 seed going to the division champion with the higher RPI. UNF currently holds an RPI higher than the three ASUN schools fighting for top spot in the Gold Division, Central Arkansas, Lipscomb and North Alabama. But that battle remains unresolved until the final games.
