Bayern eyes fixed on Cup final despite Bundesliga trophy presentation
Bayern Munich want to stay professional for next weekend's German Cup final against VfB Stuttgart, despite Saturday's last Bundesliga match of the season against Cologne being little more than a party. The men want to match Bayern's women and do the domestic double, after their Champions League hopes were ended in the semi-finals by Paris Saint-Germain. Saturday's home game with Cologne will be followed by the presentation of the Bundesliga trophy - the Meisterschale - and departing players such as Leon Goretzka will be given send-offs.
But Kompany wants to beat Cologne to head into the Cup final against holders Stuttgart on a high. "You have to win every game, that’s the Bayern mentality. You always have to be mentally prepared for every game – that’s part and parcel of being a footballer," Kompany told a news conference on Friday.
"I’m holding off on a final (season) assessment for now. We still have the crucial cup final, which is of great importance to us. The new arrivals have made us stronger - Lucho Díaz and Lennart Karl have brought something extra to the team.
" Bayern have broken the Bundesliga scoring record with 117 goals already and there will be no let up, although Kompany did say Goretzka would get a game. "Of course Leon Goretzka will start, that’s not a favour. He’s earned it through years of hard work with this club.
It’s a nice gesture for the squad," he said, also confirming Manuel Neuer will start in goal ahead of an expected announcement on a one-year contract extension.
