It was a great day at Little Rock Southwest High School as two Gryphons signed their letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college. Jordan Bowden signed her national letter of intent to play basketball at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Bowden made history Thursday as she became the first girls’ basketball player in Little Rock Southwest High history to earn a college basketball scholarship.

“I decided to go to Millsaps because I also want to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. Their academics are actually one of the best in Mississippi. So that’s why I have chosen to go there to play basketball,” Bowden shared with FOX 16 about her commitment.

“It means a lot to me. I’m just so happy. I hope I’m making my family proud, especially my mother, because she pushed me so much.

My stepdad, I just want to give all of the thanks to them and God. ” Derrick Vasser also put pen to paper as he heads to Independence, Kansas to play football at Independence Community College. The Indy Pirates program was made famous on the Netflix’s series ‘Last Chance U’ seasons 3 & 4.

“I just know that’s the school of underdogs. You know, a lot of people go there and just from a bad situation or a situation where it just wasn’t in their favor,” Vasser tells FOX 16. “My situation isn’t like theirs, but it’s a situation where, you know, I got to go and get it out of the mud.
