🥍Game of the Day It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish and the East Greenwich boys lacrosse team is hoping to finish the season like it did on Thursday night. Trailing Portsmouth at halftime, the Avengers flipped the scoreboard in the third quarter before taking control of the game in the fourth in a 10-8 win over the Patriots. The two teams met in last year’s Division II title game – won by Portsmouth – and in the rematch on April 30, which East Greenwich won, 6-5, that kept them undefeated.

May has not been as kind to the Avengers, who followed the win with losses to Westerly and Division I Pilgrim before bouncing back with wins over Prout and Middletown. Portsmouth was ready for this match and the first half was a defensive battle, with the Patriots taking a 4-3 lead thanks to second-quarter goals from Rafferty Dionne and Luke Brandariz . East Greenwich came out for the second half ready to go and took a 6-5 lead on long-pole goal by Charles Butterfield .

Dionne got another to tie the game, but Cooper Lake ’s tally gave the Avengers a 7-6 lead, one it wouldn’t give up. EG opened the fourth quarter with a goal from Brady Parks to make it a two-goal lead Portsmouth couldn’t come back from. Austin Dufresne scored the first goal of the game and had the final tally as part of his four-goal night.
