* Save Now that the Wittenberg Tigers have earned their first NCAA Division III baseball tournament berth in 32 years, they have set their sights on advancing past the first weekend for the first time. Three competitive games — two decided by one run — against a Denison team that ranks first in the nation, give coach Mitchell Griffiths’ team confidence this week. “Those guys, they’re tough customers,” Griffiths said.

“I thought our guys really went blow for blow with them. There’s a lot of respect between those two programs. ” Denison (40-1) beat Wittenberg twice in the regular season: 8-7 and 13-12 in Springfield on April 25.

In the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday, May 9, Wittenberg led Denison 8-6 through four innings but lost 14-8. Those victories are part of a 39-game winning streak Denison takes into the NCAA tournament. Wittenberg and Denison are on opposite sides of the NCAA tournament bracket, so they wouldn’t play unless they both reach the Division III World Series.

First, Wittenberg plays in the Adrian Regional at Adrian College in Michigan. Wittenberg (31-11) will play Webster University (30-14) at 11 a. m.
