MCM boys golf take top honors at home invitational
May 14—SALEM, S. D. — McCook Central/Montrose defended its home course on Wednesday, as the Fighting Cougars claimed the boys team title while Howard captured the girls title at the MCM golf invitational at McCook Country Club.
MCM's Liam Rayman turned in the top boys round of the day, firing a one-under-par 71 to edge Flandreau Indian School's Kaden Burshiem, who carded an even-par 72. Freeman's Tannen Auch and Garretson's Blake Benson shared third place after both golfers posted rounds of 74. Hanson's Sutton Squires and Freeman's Thor Aanenson tied for fifth with matching scores of 78 to round out the top five.
Hanson's Pierce Kayser followed closely behind in seventh place with a 79, while a three-way tie for eighth rounded out the top 10. Howard's Westyn Kizer, and MCM teammates Andrew Sabers and Noah Durfee, each shot an 8-over-par 80. As a team, McCook Central/Montrose secured the boys title with a 15-over-par team gross score of 87.
Hanson finished second at 97, followed by Howard in third with 99. Garretson placed fourth at 100, while Freeman completed the top five with a 101. On the girls side, Howard used strong depth to earn the team championship with a 54-over-par gross score of 126.
McCook Central/Montrose placed second at 177, and Bridgewater-Emery came in third with a 187. Halle Schulz led the Tigers individually with a standout round of 81, good for a nine-over-par score and first-place honors. Howard teammate Reese Rudenbusch took runner-up with an 88, giving the Tigers the top two individual finishers.
