Notably, the 22-year-old forward became one of the biggest breakout stories during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where he finished as one of the competition’s top scorers. At the time, many within Real Madrid believed Gonzalo could become an important part of the club’s long-term attacking plans.

However, the months that followed turned out very differently. A difficult season for Gonzalo Garcia Simply put, consistent minutes never truly materialised for the Madrid-born striker, largely because of the fierce competition ahead of him in the squad. With several players ahead of him in the pecking order, Gonzalo struggled to secure a stable role despite remaining highly rated internally.

As such, both Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa appreciated the youngster’s attitude and quality, but opportunities remained limited throughout the campaign. Borussia Dortmund lurking That situation has opened the door for Borussia Dortmund to move aggressively for the Spanish attacker. The Bundesliga side is preparing a serious sporting project around Gonzalo and view him as a possible long-term replacement for Serhou Guirassy.

The German club are believed to prefer either a loan move with an option to buy, or an agreement involving 50% of the player’s rights.
