Covington Catholic sweeps Ninth Region KHSAA boys tennis championships
See the boys tennis state tournament qualifiers from Northern Kentucky, including the Covington Catholic boys who swept the Ninth Region tournament.
The Covington Catholic Colonels had a clean sweep of the Ninth Region boys tennis tournament in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association . Junior Blake Hussey, who was a state champion a year ago with Kalei Christensen in doubles, won the Ninth Region singles championship. Jacob Kramer and Will Tribble, regional finalists and state semifinalists last season, claimed the doubles championship.
Hussey met Villa Madonna senior Shayaan Ahmad in the tournament finals. Ahmad was a regional finalist last season, withdrawing in the finals to finish as the runner-up. Hussey won the match 6-4, 6-0 over Ahmad.
More: See which Ninth, 10th Region girls qualified for KHSAA state tennis Hussey reached the finals after a 6-1, 6-1 win in the semifinals against Ryle senior Navneeth Selvaraju and Ahmad beat Highlands sophomore Dylan Fortner 6-3, 6-4. All four semifinalists in the singles and doubles tournaments advance to the KHSAA state tournament. Kramer and Tribble, both juniors for the Colonels, beat Beechwood senior Neel Reddy and Andrew Dunaway 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4).
The CovCath pair beat Highlands sophomore Lukesh Muzumdar and junior Daniel Beasey 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals. Beechwood's duo topped Villa Madonna freshman Andrew Kramer and senior Drew Gray 6-2, 6-1 in the semis. Walton-Verona freshman Finley Mackay is Region 8 runner-up Walton-Verona freshman Finley Mackay already had his ticket to the KHSAA state tournament punched with a quarterfinal win on May 12, but he added on with a regional finals appearance the next day.
