Katherine Legge to attempt first women's Indy 500, Coke 600 'double'
England's Katherine Legge will attempt to become the first woman to complete the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, May 24, in Indianapolis and Charolette, N. C. , respectively.
File Photo by Christine Chew/UPI May 13 (UPI) -- Katherine Legge will be the first woman to complete a double, racing the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, she announced Wednesday. The respective IndyCar and NASCAR events will be held May 24 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. "Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt 'The Double,' and I do not take that opportunity lightly," Legge said in a statement .
"This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourself, taking risks and trying to do something unique. "I am so incredibly grateful to e. l.
f. [Cosmetics] for believing in what this moment represents and for building a community around it. " Legge, 45, will become the sixth driver to attempt a double, joining Kyle Larson, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, Robby Gordon and John Andretti.
In 2001, Stewart became the only driver to complete every lap of both races -- covering 1,100 miles. No driver has won both races on the same day. Larson was the most recent driver to attempt the feat, doing so each of the last two years.
