'Big plus for RCB': Mohammad Kaif highlights major Varun Chakaravarthy concern for KKR
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes spinner Varun Chakaravarthy's potential absence against RCB would be a significant boost for Bengaluru. Chakaravarthy's recent return to form has been crucial for KKR's winning streak, but an injury concern looms. Kaif highlighted Virat Kohli's comfort against faster spinners, suggesting his absence would benefit RCB.
RCB head into the contest high on confidence after pulling off a thrilling two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, while KKR have revived their playoff hopes with four consecutive victories following a disastrous six-match winless run that included five defeats and one no-result. Ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s crucial IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes the possible absence of spinner Varun Chakaravarthy could hand a significant advantage to RCB. A major factor behind KKR’s resurgence has been Varun Chakaravarthy’s return to form.
The mystery spinner has claimed eight wickets in his last four matches and has once again become central to Kolkata’s bowling attack. However, his availability for the RCB clash remains doubtful after he picked up an injury while attempting to stop a shot from Ishan Kishan during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was later seen limping during his spell against Delhi Capitals.
According to ESPNCricinfo, KKR assistant coach Shane Watson said Varun was “sore and being monitored. ” The spinner was present during training and bowled briefly, though not at full intensity, before spending the remainder of the session stretching and interacting with teammates. Speaking on JioStar’s ‘Match Centre Live’, Kaif said Varun’s absence would significantly benefit RCB, especially considering Virat Kohli’s comfort against quicker spinners.
“If Varun Chakaravarthy is not available, then it is a big plus for RCB. He has come back into form recently, was bowling really well and hitting the right areas. Virat Kohli is someone who enjoys playing against faster spin bowlers,” Kaif said.
