In Belichick’s first season with the Tar Heels (2025-26), UNC won two of its first three contests before enduring a four-game losing streak and never quite getting back on track. The Tar Heels finished the year with a 4-8 record, making them ineligible for Bowl game consideration. Embarrassingly, there wasn’t a single UNC contributor drafted to the NFL spring, something that hadn’t occurred since 2016.
Now Belichick is under fire for ‘tarnishing the reputation’ of UNC for failing to control his players during the offseason. Essentially, WRAL reported that several UNC players have been cited for speeding, reckless driving, or parking in spots reserved for people with disabilities. The Tar Heels’ off-the-field shenanigans haven’t resonated well with UNC professor Mark Peifer, prompting him to send a stern email to athletic director Bubba Cunningham, where he took a subtle jab at Belichick.
“Is there no one who can rein in these players, probably only a subset of the football team, who are tarnishing the reputation of our school and of all Carolina athletes,” Peifer wrote in the email. Peifer’s frustration is warranted. With Belichick as the undeniable leader of the Tar Heels’ football program, it's his job not only to elevate UNC to new heights on the field but also to ensure that his players behave responsibly in their free time.
