The New York Mets are 15-25 on the season, and they're very likely headed towards a sell-off at the MLB trade deadline.
There are bound to be a few players who garner interest, and their starting rotation is one that the Mets will draw plenty of attention to, with Freddy Peralta the headliner. But, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report identified a different pitcher that the Mets should sell high on this season, in right-hander Clay Holmes. "He is headed for free agency next season, provided he opts against exercising a $12 million player option, making him an obvious trade candidate for the struggling Mets," Reuter writes.
"With a 1. 86 ERA that ranks second among qualified NL starters, his stock may never be higher. " Holmes is having a strong 2026 regular season, and with the Mets' struggles as a team, they should seriously consider trading Holmes as soon as possible.
Mets should trade Clay Holmes ASAP The Mets aren't likely to turn this sinking ship around this season, with the struggles of the team leading to one of the worst records in baseball. And if they do wind up as one of the worst teams by season's end, they really should look to move on from a few of their players on expiring deals. Technically, Holmes could come back for one more season, but the Mets realistically should look to trade Holmes as soon as possible, as he's likely to opt out of his $12 million option for 2027 after his $26 million two-year deal runs out.
