Xabi Alonso Emerges as Chelsea Contender Alonso, 44, has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in January, only seven months into a three-year contract. His exit came despite winning 10 of his first 11 La Liga matches, including October’s Clasico against Barcelona. His reputation, however, remains built on Bayer Leverkusen’s extraordinary 2023-24 campaign, when he led them to their first Bundesliga title with an unbeaten domestic season.
