Browns rookie quarterback right in the mix
Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken, left, chats with quarterback Taylen Green between plays during the first day of rookie minicamp May 8, 2026, at Cross Country Mortgage Campus in Berea, Ohio. The Cleveland Browns are entering its first season under head coach Todd Monken after firing head coach Kevin Stefanski. At the top of Monken’s priorities is determining who the starting quarterback will be.
The most notable contenders for the starting job are veteran Deshaun Watson and second-year arm Shedeur Sanders. However, another lesser-known name has joined the Cleveland QB room and is getting some reps under his belt in the 182nd overall pick of the 2026 draft, Taylen Green. Monken was very excited about what he saw from the young quarterback in Cleveland’s rookie minicamp.
“Well, I was lucky enough to get Lamar a lot later in his career, so let’s not … We did some things with Lamar, but he was already further along,” Monken said, per The Spun. “But you can see that with Tay. You can see from when he was at Boise to then getting with Bobby Petrino and the guys at Arkansas, he’s come a long way.
” “You can see that already and there’s still a next jump that he can make. … You’re not going to see as much of him because of the numbers, but I’m excited. I’m excited for him.
He’s a great kid and everything we’ve heard about him so far has been true. ” For his part, Green doesn’t feel any other quarterbacks really compare to his skillset. “To be honest, no,” Green said per MArky KAy Cabot.
