Insider says Steelers rookie has advantage over Roman Wilson in WR battle
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Germie Bernard was recently predicted to have the “inside track” over Roman Wilson in the WR3 positional battle.
The Pittsburgh Steelers completely overhauled their offense over the past several months, and Roman Wilson may wind up losing his spot behind DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman to a 2026 second-rounder. Reporting from the Steelers rookie minicamp alongside Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, Fittipaldo claimed that rookie Germie Bernard could see game-day action right away, positioning himself for the “inside track” on the WR3 job over Roman Wilson. “I think he’s going to be thrown into it right away,” Fittipaldo said.
“His competition right now in training camp would be Roman Wilson. Roman Wilson has had two difficult seasons trying to find his way into the NFL. So, Bernard really has an opportunity if he steps in, learns the playbook and plays well, I think he’s got the inside track on that job.
” Wilson, who was selected by the Steelers with the 84th overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, failed to make much of an impact in his first two NFL seasons — catching just 21 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. If Bernard is able to leapfrog Wilson on the depth chart for the WR3 role, there's little reason to expect a third-year breakout for the former third-rounder, even in a loaded offense this upcoming season.
