NORMAL, Ill. (WCIA) — Ahead of the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships, one Redbird runner is hoping to repeat his success at indoors. Mt.

Zion native and sophomore runner Julian Baker will suit up for Illinois State this weekend in Terre Haute after a strong second season in Normal. He earned titles in the 5000-meter and 3000-meter at conference indoor championships and has performed well throughout the outdoor season, with his coaches praising his ability to find another gear late when other runners may run out of gas. “Now it’s a matter of, you know, him having the confidence to race against some of the best guys in the country and not just some of the best guys in the Missouri Valley, because there’s a lot of great guys in the Missouri Valley that he’s going to have to continue to learn how to race,” said Redbird Director of Track and Field Jeff Bozee.

“But I think to be able to carry that over to the, you know, the rest of the NCAA, I think that’s the next step for his development that way. ” Competition begins on Saturday, May 16, hosted by Indiana State. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
