Charlton closes out Aggies as Bears sweep series

Yahoo Sports

SPRINGFIELD–Tyler Charlton entered the top of the 8th, in relief, with Missouri State and New Mexico State tied, 5-5, and the Aggies had the bases loaded with nobody out. But Charlton would strikeout the side to escape the jam, as the Bears squeaked out a 7-6 victory, on Sunday, to sweep their Conference USA series. Unlike the previous two tilts between the two teams, Sunday’s game was tightly contested.

MO State held a 2-0 lead for the first four innings, but then surrendered three runs in the top of the 5th to trail for the first time. However, in the bottom of the frame, MSU countered with three runs of their own to retake the lead. Two of those runs were gifted from NMSU by way of a wild pickoff throw to second, which allowed both Bears runners to touch home.

After Charlton escaped the bases loaded jam in the 8th, Missouri State’s bats took control and delivered the final two runs of the game to secure the much-needed sweep. With only three games left in the regular season, MSU will travel to Kennesaw State for their last series and remain there, since the Conference USA Tournament will take place there, as well. If the Bears can sweep KSU then they’ll lock up a top-3 finish in the CUSA standings, which will guarantee them a first round bye in the conference tournament, and give them the tiebreaker over lower seeds if a tie of records occurs in the confererence tournament.
