UNC baseball sweeps Pitt to win final regular season home series
The UNC baseball team capped an extremely-successful regular season at home on Sunday, beating Pitt by four runs.
After nearly three months filled with games inside Boshamer Stadium, the UNC baseball team played its final, 2026 regular season home game in Chapel Hill on Sunday. Thanks to a big day from catcher Colin Hynek , the Diamond Heels downed Pitt, 7-3, completing the weekend series sweep. North Carolina (40-9-1, 20-7 ACC) finished with a 28-6-1 mark inside Boshamer Stadium this season, losing only to Virginia (twice), Coastal Carolina, Louisville, Boston College and Georgia Tech.
UNC did a little bit of everything to win its final regular season home series, with a pair of pitching duels bookending an offensive breakout Saturday. Let's dive deeper into each Diamond Heels win below: Game 1 – UNC 4, Pitt 1 Jason DeCaro delivered another all-star outing on the mound Friday, hurling five innings of scoreless baseball with seven strikeouts, securing his North Carolina-best ninth victory in the process. Gavin Gallaher homered in the first inning, followed by a Macon Winslow blast in the second.
Cooper Nicholson launched a bomb in the fourth, then Winslow drove Jake Schaffner home on an eighth-inning sacrifice fly. Pitt (28-21, 10-17 ACC) managed just six hits, scoring its lone run on a sixth-inning, bases-loaded walk. Game 2 – UNC 12, Pitt 2 Pitt took the lead first on a third inning solo shot, but the Diamond Heels responded with three runs in their half, taking the lead for good on a Gavin Gallaher sacrifice fly.
North Carolina led 6-2 heading into the seventh inning, then dropped five runs on Panther pitching, capped off by a 2-run blast from Tyler Howe. Nicholson was UNC's top run producer on Saturday, driving in three runs on two hits, while also scoring a pair of runs himself. Schaffner was automatic in the leadoff spot, reaching base all five times with two hits and three walks, while also scoring three times.
