Lakers Legend Magic Johnson Speaks at Stillman College Commencement

Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson delivered the keynote address at Stillman College’s 2026 Spring Commencement on Saturday. He encouraged the graduates to step out of their comfort zones like he did when transitioning from being an NBA star to a businessman. Johnson created Magic Johnson Enterprises in 1987 shortly before retiring from the NBA. He also owns small stakes in multiple professional sports franchises like the Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, LAFC and more.

“You have to sometimes be uncomfortable to get comfortable,” Johnson said in his speech. “I know what to do with that ball – but, I wanted to become a businessman, so I got uncomfortable,” he added. “It made me uncomfortable because I didn’t know business, so I had to study, (do) research, get mentors who are businesspeople to teach me so I can get comfortable with finally becoming a businessman.

” Johnson Was Awarded an Honorary Degree Johnson was also awarded an honorary doctor of business administration degree and made an honorary member of Stillman’s basketball team. Stillman presented Johnson with a framed basketball jersey at the ceremony. Stillman College President Yolanda Page praised Johnson for his commitment to Black excellence and education.
