Marquez had been running seventh in the Sprint race before he was thrown from his bike, resulting in a fractured fifth metatarsal. He later confirmed to reporters that he would need surgery on his foot, alongside a previously planned shoulder operation.

This means he will miss next weekend’s Catalan Grand Prix, his home race. Marc Marquez was found emotional after the French GP crash, according to a report Photo by Gold & Goose Photography/Getty Images Speaking to Spanish television after the race, Marquez said that if he did break down, it would be away from the cameras and with his family. But, as reported by El Periodico, he was seen visibly upset as he left the Le Mans clinic alongside his personal assistant, Jose Luis Martinez, and MotoGP medical director, Angel Charte.

The latest injury comes on the back of a tough stretch for Marquez, who has only managed to complete one of the past seven seasons due to multiple injuries. His troubles began with a broken arm at Jerez in 2020, which required four surgeries and ended his title defence early. After spending several years trying to get back into shape and form, Marquez finally reached full fitness in 2024.

He capped off his return by winning another championship last year but then picked up a shoulder injury just one race into this season. But it wasn’t just the injury that had been bothering him.

A screw from his shoulder surgery had come loose, which offered some explanation for his struggles early in the season. The same source described how learning this ‘lifted a huge weight off his shoulders’. Until then, he had feared that a lack of motivation or confidence might have been at fault.
