Steelers HC Drew Allar only quarterback at rookie minicamp for a reason
Mike McCarthy said he wanted to push Drew Allar and answer some questions so he didn't being a second QB to Steelers rookie minicamp
It might not matter this season, but new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is working hard for the future of this team. And he's working rookie quarterback Drew Allar hard as well. The Steelers held their rookie minicamp over the weekend and the only quarterback McCarthy had on site was Allar and it was by design.
McCarthy wanted to give Allar a heavy workload and push him to see what he can do well and where he needs to improve. Having only Allar at camp allowed McCarthy to work with Allar on those improvements, primarily his footwork. Allar admitted as much that his lower half is where he needs to get better.
Allar is the best option the Steelers have had as a replacement for former Steeler Ben Roethlisberger since his retirement. This minicamp was a chance for Allar to ask the questions he needs to and it allowed McCarthy to ask his own questions of the rookie. The Steelers other young quarterback, Will Howard will be back working with the team in the next round of OTAs.
This will be a great opportunity for McCarthy and the Steelers coaching staff to get a great side-by-side of their best options for the future after a few days of intense coaching of the rookie.
