District 3 tennis: Conrad Weiser’s Owen Hunt and John Tharp win Class 2A doubles title
The Conrad Weiser doubles team of Owen Hunt and John Tharp won the Class 2A doubles title on Saturday in the District 3 Tennis Doubles Championships in Hershey. It’s the second doubles title in a row for the Scouts, with Armaan Malik and Jio Garcia winning last year and then going on to win the PIAA title in Hershey. Hunt and Tharp defeated Sullivan Stringer and David Schnatz of Berks Catholic 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match.
Both teams qualified for the PIAA Championships, May 23-24 at the Hershey Racquet Club. In the semifinals, Hunt and Tharp defeated East Pennsboro’s Ian Aunkst and Blake Pasda 6-4, 6-1, and Stringer and Schnatz beat Nolan Stoltzfus and Jake Feisert of Pequea Valley 6-3, 6-4. It was the seventh disrict doubles title in Conrad Weiser tennis history.
“Today was a tremendous display of textbook doubles by our guys,” said Conrad Weiser head doach Ryan Knarr. “They played some of their best tennis of the year in the big moments of the championship match and have a great opportunity to make another deep run in the PIAA State Tournament. We are excited to be back in Hershey to chase another state doubles title.
” In AAA, Chris Uzar and Ethan Mengel of Wilson defeated Dallastown’s Nathaniel Erickson and Holden Depe 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 for third place and advance to the state tournament. The three Berks doubles teams will be joined at the state tournament by Wyomissing sophomore Parth Khachane who won the Class 2A singles championship for the second straight year. Khachane defeated Landon Lubart of Boiling Springs 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.
In four matches in the district tournament, Khachane only lost four games, winning each match in straight sets.
