Sylmar pitcher, Carson quarterback thank their mothers, who are raising families by themselves, for being their No. 1 fans.

On Mother's Day, letโ€™s salute two single mothers who became the No. 1 fans for their sports-playing sons and stayed by their side through good and bad times. Sylmar pitcher Matthew Torres has tried to make it through life without a father after his parents' separation when he was 12.

โ€œHeโ€™s not been to any high school games,โ€ Torres said. Enter his mother, Roxanne, who has raised four boys and one girl by multitasking and embracing sports activities. She intervened to help Matthew make it through tough times.

โ€œHer bringing me to church and getting to know God has made me the man I am today,โ€ the 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior said. Torres became the No. 1 pitcher in the Valley Mission League this season with an 8-0 record while also hitting .
