On Mother's Day, letโs salute two single mothers who became the No. 1 fans for their sports-playing sons and stayed by their side through good and bad times. Sylmar pitcher Matthew Torres has tried to make it through life without a father after his parents' separation when he was 12.
โHeโs not been to any high school games,โ Torres said. Enter his mother, Roxanne, who has raised four boys and one girl by multitasking and embracing sports activities. She intervened to help Matthew make it through tough times.
โHer bringing me to church and getting to know God has made me the man I am today,โ the 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior said. Torres became the No. 1 pitcher in the Valley Mission League this season with an 8-0 record while also hitting .
