Virginia Beach United & Lionsbridge play to 1-1 draw in season opener
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (COURTESY OF VIRGINIA BEACH UNITED) — Virginia Beach United and Lionsbridge FC opened the 2026 USL League Two season Saturday night in familiar fashion, battling to a 1-1 draw at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The result mirrored last season’s opener between the two clubs, which also ended level at 1-1. Lionsbridge struck early, finding the breakthrough in just the 5th minute.
Cristian Ortiz finished off an opportunity assisted by Christian Hatley to give the visitors the quick advantage. Virginia Beach United settled into the match after the early setback and eventually found the equalizer midway through the first half. In the 32nd minute, Portsmouth native Alex Moody buried a chance off an assist from Micah Wayland to level the match at 1-1.
The goal carried added significance for Moody, as it marked the 9th goal of his VBU career, tying Donnett Sackie for the most all-time goals scored in club history. The match remained physical and intense throughout, fitting the rivalry atmosphere between the two Chesapeake Division clubs. Lionsbridge accumulated four yellow cards on the night, issued to Josh Baker (24’), Cristian Hatley (35’), Cristian Ortiz (60’), and Hoyos Lopez (87’).
VBU’s lone booking came in the 88th minute against Samuel Phillips. Virginia Beach United controlled several statistical categories, outshooting Lionsbridge 9-7 and holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. VBU goalkeeper Alfred Mikkelsen was strong between the posts in his season debut, recording five saves to help preserve the draw.
