Diamondbacks-Mets updates. Justin Martinez 'electric' in mound session

Yahoo Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks face the New York Mets on Saturday, May 9, in the second game of their three-game series.

Right-hander Justin Martinez’s first bullpen session since undergoing his second Tommy John surgery last year was “electric,” manager Torey Lovullo said, adding that Martinez’s fastball was in the 96-99 mph range. “He’s in a good spot,” Lovullo said. “I’m really happy for him.

” Martinez threw the bullpen on Friday, May 8, at Salt River Fields. It is, of course, a highly encouraging sign for Martinez’s velocity to be near its usual range, but he still has a long way to go before the club considers bringing him back from the injured list. The club is targeting sometime in the final two months of the season.

Lovullo said Martinez will need to throw 15 bullpens before potentially beginning a minor-league rehab assignment. In other injury news, first baseman Carlos Santana will play on Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, for Triple-A Reno, Lovullo said, intimating that he could be reinstated from the injured list after that. “He’s progressing to a point where we’ll probably have a conversation at some point in the next 24 to 36 hours about where he’s at,” Lovullo said.

Outfielder Jordan Lawlar will undergo follow-up imaging on his fractured wrist next week, at which point he could begin to ramp up activities, including hitting. —Nick Piecoro Mets at Diamondbacks , 4:15 p. m.
