Virginia Tech softball makes NCAA Tournament hosting case after loss
Despite losing to Florida State in the ACC title game, Virginia Tech coach Pete D'Amour believes his Hokies should host an NCAA Tournament regional.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — When the NCAA Softball Tournament begins next week, Pete D'Amour believes there should be games played in Blacksburg, Virginia. Like NCAA Tournaments for a handful of other sports — such as women’s basketball and baseball — the top 16 seeds in the softball tournament get to host games during the opening weekend of competition in sub-regionals. D'Amour, who is in his seventh season as the head coach of Virginia Tech, thinks the Hokies have done enough to earn the right to host.
“I mean, what else do we need to do? We beat the teams we were supposed to, the teams in front of us. I think the resume speaks for itself,” D’Amour said.
“We've been able to hang all year and I think we proved it. … We played well against a team that’s been picked to host regionals all year (Duke). We boosted our resume.
It’s pretty darn good. ” Virginia Tech is 46-10 on the season and advanced to the title game of the ACC Tournament on Saturday, where the Hokies fell to Florida State, 2-1, at Palmer Park. It was the first time Virginia Tech had competed for an ACC title in softball since 2012.
