Mets Pitcher Clay Holmes Could Be Trade Candidate If New York Continues To Struggle

Boasting a dominant 1.69 ERA amid a dismal team start, the New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes is a potential trade chip at the deadline.

The New York Mets have gotten off to a poor start and began May with the worst record in the entire National League. Injuries to stars such as Juan Soto and Luis Robert Jr. haven't helped, but disappointing play from some free agent acquisitions such as Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco also have not been what this team was expecting.

David Stearns and the Mets appear intent on keeping manager Carlos Mendoza, at least for now, although things can certainly change quickly on that front. If the Mets continue to lose games, they might be forced to sell some pieces at the MLB trade deadline and try to recoup some assets while thinking about the future. Robert Murray of Fansided named some players who could be moved at this year's deadline, and he had Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes on the list.

Now, the Mets will try their very best and wait as long as possible to see if things turn around, but if they don't, Holmes might be the best choice to move in a deal. "But if they are out of postseason contention come July, Holmes and his 1. 69 ERA over seven starts would be an incredibly intriguing option.

Heโ€™s signed to a two-year, $26 million contract with a 2027 player option, which seems likely to be declined," Murray wrote. Murray added that Holmes would be "one of the most coveted arms on the entire market" if the Mets make him available at the deadline, so it is something to watch. Right now, Holmes has gotten off to a very strong start.
