GIRLS GOLF: Claremore takes 10th at Class 5A State Championship

Two days on one of Oklahoma’s premier golf courses tested every golfer in the field, and Claremore kept grinding until the final putt dropped. The Lady Zebras finished 10th at the Class 5A State Championship at Shangri-La Golf Club in Afton, posting a two-day team score of 814 against one of the deepest fields in the state Monday and Tuesday. Ada captured the team championship with a 699, while Tahlequah’s Kylie Fisher claimed the individual title with a 157, 5 strokes clear of the runner-up.

Claremore was led by Kate Merriman and Ava Pettus, who each finished tied for 28th overall with two-day totals of 194. Merriman opened the tournament with the Lady Zebras’ best round of the event, carding a 93 Monday before finishing with a 101 Tuesday. Pettus rebounded from an opening-round 100 by shaving 6 strokes off her score in the final round with a 94, matching Merriman atop Claremore’s leaderboard.

Brooklyn Babbitt also improved significantly on the second day, bouncing back from a 104 to shoot a 97 and finish 40th overall with a 201. Victoria Leal placed 63rd with rounds of 112 and 113, while Harper Rooney finished 71st after carding a 118 Monday and 130 Tuesday. Meanwhile, local golfers also competed in the Class 4A State Championship at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore.

Oologah’s Brooklyn Jones led the area contingent there, finishing 34th with a two-day total of 200 after rounds of 102 and 98. Verdigris’ Jackie Beauchamp finished 60th with a 216, while Oologah’s Karsyn Littlepage placed 65th with a 220 and Lucy Williams finished 69th with a 227. Holland Hall’s Megan Kalapura won the Class 4A individual title with a 149, while Plainview dominated the team standings with a 672, winning the championship by 46 strokes.
