Indiana basketball has added a second 7-footer to its roster. Why that matters for the 2026-27 season

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball on Friday addressed its need for more post depth with the commitment of 18-year-old German center Clemens Sokolov. IndyStar confirmed Sokolov’s commitment Friday afternoon. DraftExpress’ Jonathan Givony was first.

Sokolov averaged 6. 4 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes per game last season for Wuerzburg in Germany’s Pro B South league. His commitment hands Darian DeVries a second 7-footer to add to his roster, behind SMU transfer Samet Yigitoglu.

More importantly, Sokolov gives DeVries depth in the post behind Yigitoglu and Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell, allowing DeVries the freedom to play more two-big lineups next season. Sokolov is not Indiana’s first European import under DeVries. Aleksa Ristic and Andrej Acimovic came to IU from professional setups overseas last year.

Both have since transferred, Ristic to Belmont and Acimovic to Missouri State. IU will have a more specific role in mind for Sokolov, who can play behind the other two bigs and develop his game in Bloomington. His commitment brings DeVries’ complement of scholarship players for 2026-27 to 11 of a possible 13.
