Rally competitor dies following medical incident

A competitor has died following a medical incident during the Manx National Rally. Competitive stages in the rally, which is one of two held on the Isle of Man each year, began on Friday morning. In a joint statement, Motorsport UK said it and organisers Manx Auto Sport were "deeply saddened to confirm that a competitor participating in the Manx National Rally today has passed away following a medical incident during the event".

As a mark of respect, the "stage on which the incident occurred will not be run again" they added. No further details about the nature of the incident were revealed. This year's rally, which attracted a record entry of 170 teams, began with a "shakedown" session in the north of the island on Thursday evening.

Due to be run over 22 special stages, held on closed roads across the island, the competitive action began shortly after 09:00 BST on Friday. The statement said: "Motorsport UK and the organising team extend their sincere condolences to the family, friends and the wider rallying community at this difficult time.
