German foundation offers more funds for pregnant athletes, childcare

A German sports foundation is expanding funding for pregnant athletes and elite sportspeople who need help with childcare. "Our aim is to support athletes as well as possible in all phases of life. That also includes responding to changing life realities," Karin Orgeldinger, responsible for athlete funding on Sporthilfe's executive board, said in a statement on Friday.

The increase in funding is being publicized due to Mother's Day in Germany on Sunday. Pregnant athletes miss out on prize money while they are unable to compete. Parents in elite sport can now also receive grants from the foundation to enable them to continue their careers after starting a family.

New support will include travel and accommodation costs for children up to the age of 3 and a caregiver at competitions or official training camps.
