Hosts Mexico finds out rivals for 2026 CONCACAF U20 Championship
Mexico was drawn in Group B along with Guatemala, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda.
Mexico found out their rivals in the 2026 U20 Championship, which they will hosts in the city of Puebla and Mexico City. The tournament will not only determine the four teams that will play in the 2027 U20 World Cup but they will also determine the single spot for the 2028 Olympic Games besides host United States. Last time a U20 tournament determined both World Cup and Olympic spots, Mexico had one of the worst failures in their history when they were eliminated by Guatemala in a Penatly Kick shootout at the Quarterfinals stage, meaning they missed out of both tournaments.
Mexico bounced back two years later to win the 2024 U20 CONCACAF Championship in Leon, Guanajuato. Like in 2024, Mexico was not seeded in Group A even as they are the hosts. This time Mexico was seeded in Group B (They were seeded in Group C in 2024 because of failing to qualify in 2022) which will play in Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla.
Mexico will share the group with Guatemala, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda. The top two teams as well as the two third placed teams with the better record will go thru to the Quarterfinals. In the Quarterfinals, the winners that go thru to the Semifinals will also qualify to 2027 U20 World Cup.
The Semifinals and the Final will move to Estadio Banorte in Mexico City. The winner of the final will qualify to the Olympic games and if the United States is one of the teams that reaches the final, then the other team that qualifies to the final will book the ticket to the Olympics. Mexico will start their tournament by facing off against Antigua and Barbuda in Estadio Cuauhtemoc, Puebla on Friday July 24th.
