ESPN's Adam Rittenberg recently spoke with head coaches and coordinators from every 'Power 4' league in college football after the 2026 NFL Draft to gather opinions on the results. An unarmed defensive coordinator pointed out the Kansas City Chiefs ' selection of LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in the seventh round. "LSU's Nussmeier dealt with several injuries, including a cyst on his spine discovered during testing at the combine.
He landed with the Kansas City Chiefs (No. 249)," wrote Rittenberg. "Who knows why he fell so far, but I studied him, and that kid is a stud," said a defensive coordinator who faced Nussmeier.
"Obviously, didn't have a great season, but he's a good player. " An abdominal injury last November severely affected Nussmeier's performance and progress, limiting him to 9 games in 2025. The 2025 season ended with 1,927 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions.
Nussmeier was a finalist for the Manning Award as the nation's top quarterback in 2024, finishing the season with 4,052 passing yards and tying for 10th with 29 passing touchdowns in 13 games.
