£35m defender could join Liverpool over Chelsea Sources in January reported that Liverpool were close to securing a deal for centre-back Joel Ordonez. The 22-year-old Ecuador international has established himself as one of the best up-and-coming defenders around over the last few seasons. Having struck out for Belgian football back in 2022 the right-footed centre-back has been a leading light for Club Brugge in the Jupiler League as well as the Champions League in recent campaigns.
Even if Liverpool didn't ultimately conclude a deal in January it is only a matter of time before the South American moves up in the world - with interest coming in hot from the Premier League. TEAMtalk is reporting that Chelsea were in attendance to assess Ordonez over the weekend as Brugge overcame Anderlecht in a key match for the Belgian title. But do not discount Liverpool for a deal - they remain in the transfer chase alongside plenty of other English teams.
Joel Ordonez figures in Liverpool's thinking “Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa have all been closely monitoring Ordonez in recent months as they assess defensive targets ahead of the summer window,” the report reads. The report adds that Club Brugge's asking price is likely to be around the £35m mark. Liverpool need adequate defensive cover heading into the new season.
New options include Giovanni Leoni when he returns from injury as well as Mor Talla Ndiaye and Jeremy Jacquet. But the Premier League champions could lose Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer if no new contract is agreed with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out of contract a year later. Richard Hughes and Arne Slot therefore will be assessing their options carefully - with Ordonez now back on the radar.
