Connecticut’s state bird could soon be Sue Bird– at least during March

Connecticut’s official state bird is the American Robin, but for UConn fans, there’s little doubt that those little black-and-orange guys– while cute– aren’t quite the most popular bird in the state. Connecticut’s official state bird is the American Robin , but for UConn fans, there’s little doubt that those little black-and-orange guys– while cute– aren’t quite the most popular bird in the state. That distinction would go to Sue Bird , the legendary Huskies women’s basketball player and Basketball Hall of Famer. So, in the early hours Wednesday, state legislators moved to address that gap.

An amendment in an 111-page bill (SB477) looked to make Sue Bird a co-official state bird, along with the robin, every March, to celebrate the Huskies and the NCAA Tournament. “The American robin, Turdus migratorius, shall be the state bird, provided in the month of March of each year, the American robin and Suzanne Brigit Bird, also known as Sue Bird, shall be the state birds,” the bill read. “I think it’s a great honor,” House Speaker Matt Ritter told reporters Wednesday.

“It speaks well to our love affair with our university and our basketball team and the month of March, and what it means to the state, so I think it’s a nice gesture. ” The bill, which mostly deals with the state budget and other issues, was expected to pass the state House on Wednesday. It would then be signed into law by Gov.
