Kobbie Mainoo: Man United star keeps alive another stunning club record Last week was quite a week for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo. Renaissance After spending 12 months out in the cold under Ruben Amorim, Mainoo has once again established himself as a key figure under Michael Carrick. Reports suggested that the midfielder was close to leaving Manchester United in recent months, with SSC Napoli, Arsenal and Chelsea all very interested in his services.
Fortunately for United, he stayed, and his performances have sky-rocketed in recent months. He was outstanding against Brentford on Monday of last week and then signed a new long-term deal at the club just under a week ago. Mainoo marked this with another impressive outing versus arch-rivals Liverpool, capping it all off with the match-winner in front of the Stretford End on Sunday afternoon.
Greater significance The youngster’s goal already carried great significance as it helped secure United’s place in the Champions League next season. What’s more, it sealed a first league double over Liverpool in a decade. There was even more meaning to the beautiful strike, though, as the club’s official website has pointed out.
The site states, “a homegrown product has scored in every season” since the post-War era (1945). This record was in huge jeopardy entering the final month of the season, but Mainoo’s brilliance has kept the streak alive for another season. The likes of Sir Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs contributed massively to this run over the years, with Sammy McIlroy bridging the gap between the two players.
