Cedanne Rafaela capped off a two-out first-inning rally with a three-run home run off Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Framber Valdez. The Tigers responded with two first-inning runs of their own, but a scoreless second frame gave way to an offensive explosion from Boston in the third. Trevor Story, Cedanne Rafaela, Andrew Monasterio, Caleb Durbin, and Connor Wong put together a string of five straight singles as the Red Sox plated five runs in the inning.

They picked up right where they left off in the top of the fourth inning when Wilson Contreras absolutely pimped a 449-foot home run to left center field. The very next batter was Wilyer Abreu. Abreu took the first pitch for a ball, then pulled the second pitch to right field, placing it well into the bleachers and trotting around the bases before putting on the Wally mask.

Back-to-back home runs brought Valdez's earned run count to 10 in just three innings, and he decided that he had had enough. Story was the next batter, and Valdez decided the Red Sox veteran had to pay for his teammates' going yard. Valdez put the first pitch up and in and caught Story directly between the numbers with a 94-mile-an-hour fastball.
